This year’s Sundance Film Festival was particularly kind to Latinos. Quinceañera, a Hispanic coming-of-age story based in Los Angeles, took home both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the dramatic competition. The World Cinema Documentary Competition was dominated by two Mexican films: In The Pit, written and directed by Juan Carlos Rulfo, was awarded the World Cinema Jury Prize, while De Nadie, directed by Tin Dirdamal, received the World Cinema Audience Award.
With the presence of significant personalities in the film industry, Hispanic Magazine, Latin World Entertainment, Paraiso Pictures, Belvedere Vodka, Macondo Restaurant and Alexis Garcia celebrated for the first time Latino cinema during the HISPANIC Magazine Party: Macondo at Sundance.
The event took place Sunday, January 22, at the Airborne Lounge in Park City in Utah, bringing together more than 300 VIP guests, who enjoyed the best of Latin American music. In attendance, among others, were directors Fabian Bielniski (Aura), Fernando León (Princesas), Carlos Bolado (Sólo Dios Sabe) and Simon Brand (Unknown), actors Alicia Braga (Sólo Dios Sabe), Jesse Garcia (Quinceañera) and Clayne Crawford (Steel City) and important industry executives such as Christy Haubegger (CAA), Shaun Redick and Renee Tab (ICM), Randy Manis, David Finkell, Daniel Katz (Think Film), José Martínez (Palm Pictures), David Ortiz (Universal), Antonio Sosa (Warner), Rick Ramírez (FOX), Roberto Buso-García (HBO), Alexis Garcia (National Association of Latin American Independent Producers), Pablo Godoy and Caroline Libresco (Sundance Festival) and Marlene Dermer (Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival).
