10th Brazilian Film Festival of Miami

One of the best foreign film festivals in the U.S., this Brazilian Film Festival of Miami expects to attract more than 1,000 viewers to its 50 films. IFE-ILE Afro-Cuban Dance Festival

Dance classes, workshops, arts and crafts, discussions about Cuban arts and culture and cultural tours of ethnic neighborhoods are just a few of the highlights of the two-day festival. Festival Betances Villa Victoria

Now in its 33rd year, the Festival Betances, as it is known, celebrates the life of Dr. Ramón Emeterio Beances, a 19th century Puerto Rican patriot, poet, medical doctor, abolitionist and artist, with music, dance, food and arts and crafts. Colección FEMSA, Una Mirada Continental

This traveling exhibit of 56 Latin American artists features modern and contemporary art dating from 1914 to 2004. With special emphasis on Mexico, it includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphic arts, installations, photography, and video. This traveling exhibition comes to Albuquerque from the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, in Monterrey, Mexico.

Dichos: Words to Live, Love and Laugh By in Latin America

Photographs and artifacts depicting proverbs and sayings that are painted on trucks in Latin America are on display through the summer. Dichos are words conveying the personal views of their drivers on bumpers, bodies, hoods, cabs, windows and mud flaps and are about people, humor, and passion. The exhibit is the result of more than a decade’s work by Dr. Grant La Farge, and is accompanied by a collection of miniatures created by Latin American artists.

The International Stars of Cuban Ballet

The 2006 ALMA Awards

The ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) Awards are the only national awards show to honor Latino talent in fi lm, television and music, and recognize the enhancement of the Latino image in the media. Eva Longoria, a past ALMA award recipient and star of Desperate Housewives and The Sentinel, is this year’s host and one of the show’s producers.

This year two icons of Hispanic music and fi lm are honored: Singer Marc Anthony receives the special Celia Cruz Award for Excellence in Music and actor and director Andy Garcia takes home the Anthony Quinn Award for Excellence in Motion Pictures.

The awards were created in 1995 to promote the fair and accurate portrayals of Latinos in the media. Presented by the National Council of La Raza, the award ceremony returns to TV and is broadcast on Thursday, June 5 at 9:30 p.m. EST on ABC. www.almaawards.com
