The Top 25 Colleges for Latinos

6. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
www.columbia.edu
212 Hamilton Hall
New York, NY 10027
212-854-2522
Type of school: private
Tuition/Room and board: $31,472/$9,066
Hispanic students: 7 percent
New York City gives Columbia University one leg up on its Ivy League cousins. Not many colleges offer a top-notch education and the opportunity to live in a city alive with culture and diversity. Just beyond Columbia’s wrought-iron gates on the Upper West Side of NYC are Museum Mile, Restaurant Row, Lincoln Center, Broadway, Wall Street, Greenwich Village, and more. Like New York itself, Columbia professors are open-minded and liberal, aiming to stimulate critical thinking about social and political issues as well as teach factual knowledge.

7. BROWN UNIVERSITY

Box 1920
Providence, RI 02912
401-863-2378
Type of school: private
Tuition/Room and board: $31,334/$8,474
Hispanic students: 7 percent
Brown University practices the most open-minded vision of education among Ivy League schools. The college has no core requirements, and students can take any class on a pass/fail basis. The college aims to encourage independence and creative thinking. Indeed, many students are liberal and interested in the arts, but the college’s laissez-faire curriculum can be challenging for students without direction. Perched atop College Hill overlooking Providence, Brown has a popular new president, Ruth Simmons, the first African American to head an Ivy League school.

8. UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
www.uchicago.edu
5801 S. Ellis Avenue
Chicago, IL 60637
773-702-8650
Type of school: private
Tuition/Room and board: $30,729/$9,624
Hispanic students: 8 percent
The University of Chicago is not for the faint of heart. Students are single-minded in their academic pursuits and a quarter system that packs final exams closer together than other schools pushes students to excel. Premedical students, for example, take organic and biochemistry in one year instead of 18 months. A Common Core requires students to take six classes apiece in humanities, math and natural sciences plus social science, language and physical education classes. Make sure to pack a parka because winters are cold and long on this 211-acre campus outside Chicago.

9. RICE UNIVERSITY
www.rice.edu
PO Box 1892
Houston, TX 77251-1892
713-348-7423
Type of school: private
Tuition/Room and board: $18,826/$8,380
Hispanic students: 11 percent
Renowned for engineering and the sciences, Rice students enjoy dynamic professors and a congenial social scene. Students have been known to camp out in front of the registrar’s office to secure a spot in Dennis Houston’s public speaking class. Another favorite is a Bombs and Rockets class about the politics of U.S. national security. Campus parties replete with themes and costumes in eight residential colleges are equally lively on this 300-acre campus with 4,000 shade trees in the nation’s fourth-largest city.

10. UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME
www.nd.edu
Notre Dame, IN 46556
574-631-7505
Type of school: private
Tuition/Room and board: $29,512/$7,418
Hispanic students: 8 percent
The University of Notre Dame is steeped in tradition from its Catholic roots to its revered football team. Theology is among the requirements, and each dorm has a chapel where Mass is celebrated every day except Saturdays, reserved, of course, for football reveling, which often begins Thursday night and culminates with parades throughout campus on game day. Academics are equally strong on this 1,250-acre campus known for its sense of community and pride, even after graduation among the Notre Dame family at large.
