Films have come to play such an important role in
the way people grow to understand other cultures or peoples. In
fact, some world events would have never gotten the exposure they
deserved had it not been for a movie adaptation—think Hotel
Rwanda, City of God or Schindler’s List. Great films. These
striking and different films—as well as their great writers,
directors and casts—have acted as spotlights, illuminating
characters, stories and settings that movie-goers might never have
seen. It’s with this in mind that we searched for the actors,
writers and directors who have brought new characters and scripts
to the big screen, breathing life into a Latino story or even offering
their heritage to make the work their own. In our annual Entertainment
Issue, we take a look at eight compelling stars who do just that
(p. 22). In our cover story, we also look at two of the most celebrated
Latino actors of our generation—Diego Luna and Gael García
Bernal (p. 32). Having burst onto the screen together in the acclaimed
movie Y tu mamá también and impressing audiences and
critics with their dynamic chemistry, the two return in the new
film Rudo y Cursi, where they play, fittingly, two brothers who
are at once friends and rivals. Off-screen, the pair have launched
a film company together and are helping to produce the kinds of
off-kilter and independent-type film that made them stars. For instance,
the film Sin Nombre, was one of the company’s new projects
with director Cary Joji Fukunaga (p. 44). Elsewhere this issue we
speak with the rockers of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, who make their
triumphant return with a new album and reunion tour (p. 46). For
those itching for a summer escape, writer Mark Holston introduces
five breathtaking Latin American locations ripe for tourism (p.
14). And we select a little something sparkly just for mom (p. 30).
Enjoy!
