What
We Can Demand
A few pages into your magazine (December/January 2009) I was disappointed
to come across the narrow-minded viewpoint of Mr. Navarette’s
article regarding whether Mr. Obama will deliver for Hispanics.
Mr. Obama would not do the Hispanic community any favors by appointing
or feeling that he is required to appoint Hispanics to Treasury,
Defense, State or Justice. What we do need is action and results,
regardless of the background of the people he has requested for
any appointment.
I am just as proud when I see members of our Cabinet, from any background,
visit the Latin American countries building our partnership.

The Real Nelly
This may come late but I believe that some correction is on order.
In your December/January 2009 issue, on page 76 in the calender
section, it says that singer Nelly Furtado is Brazilian when in
fact she’s Canadian of Portuguese ancestry.

Oprah for Hispanics?
When I saw your article (Panorama; December/January 2009) on Oprah
in Hispanic, I was astonished. Harpo does not promote Hispanics
at all.
Oh, maybe Shakira, Ricky or Jennifer (only when they are in the
news at the time). Check out her guest list for the last 22 years.
She is a supposed advocate of women’s rights and yet she has
failed to even mention the atrocities committed against the women
of Juarez, Mexico.
She does not recognize the work of the Latino singers who contribute
to the Hispanic community. People like Juanes, Ricky, Juan Luis
Guerra, even Shakira. Let’s not get into the movies industry.
Oh well circulation, circulation.

Fighting Back and Facing
Off Domestic Violence
Great article “Facing Off Domestic Violence” (November
2008). I am the president of Royalty, a nonprofit organization spreading
awareness on teen dating abuse.
My 18-year-old niece was murdered on August 19, 2007 by her husband
of one month. They had a beautiful fairy tale wedding, but not a
fairy tale ending—murder-suicide. Your article brings awareness
to domestic violence.
I recall when I was younger domestic violence was something adults
experienced. Does anyone have any idea how prevalent dating abuse
is amongst our teenagers?

Corrections: In the November 2008
edition, the name of the photographer who photographed singer Fonseca
for the cover story was accidentally omitted. Francisco Aguila was
the photographer. The TV program Extra was incorrectly written as
Extra! We regret the errors.
