COMIDA
ESPAÑOLA
Made in Spain
By José Andrés
The Author: A native of the Asturias region of northern Spain, José
Andrés knows about all dishes Spanish. Honing his craft with
such celebrated chefs as Barcelona’s Ferran Adria, Andrés
won James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef Mid-Atlantic in 2003
and Bon Appetit magazine’s Chef of the Year. His company runs
seven restaurants in Washington, D.C.
What to Expect: In his second cookbook, Andrés highlights
the culinary delights of Spain region by region, from a tour of
cheese in Cantabria to the fish dishes of the coastal area. In terms
of recipes, Andrés takes readers into the Spanish kitchen
with country favorites like soups, stews and sandwiches, and of
course, paella.
MEXICAN
TABLE
My Mexico
By Diana Kennedy
The Author: This British-born author is one of the Englishspeaking
world’s leading
experts on Mexican cuisine, for which she received the Aztec Eagle,
Mexico’s highest honor. She has written three other books,
all on her love of south of
the border foods.
What to Expect: In addition to great writing about the sights, sounds
and smells of Mexico (which alone are enough to whet the appetite)
Kennedy delights recipes such as calabacitas con hongos (squash
with mushrooms), botana de papas
locas (crazy potato snacks) and chilatas (a salty seasoning for
everything). The book is packed with hundreds of recipes and explanations
of why they are
among the author’s favorites.
CUBAN
COCINA
Estefan Kitchen
By Emilio and Gloria Estefan
The Authors: The famous Cuban musicians and philanthropists veered
into the culinary world when they became restaurateurs and owners
of Bongos Cuban Café in Walt Disney World, Miami Beach and
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Here they reveals the recipes that made
their restaurants favorites among Cuban diners.
What to Expect: With dishes like vaca frita (marinated flank steak),
camarones al ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce) and chuletas de puerco
(Cuban-style pork chops), among others, the Estefans stick to the
classics. Known as comida criolla, the
dishes represent the hominess of foods, drinks and desserts the
Estefans ate growing up.
COMFORT
FOODS
Take this Dish and Twist It
By George Duran
The Author: George Duran, known as Food Network’s Ham on the
Street, may have spent his early culinary career in Paris, but for
this Venezuela native,
nothing beats good old American comfort food. Here, Duran throws
the ordinary on its ear, mixing breakfast foods with dinner dishes
and desserts with main courses.
What to Expect: Duran takes favorites like cheeseburgers, pancakes,
hot dogs and pizza and turns them into cheeseburger frittatas, raspberry
and white chocolate soy pancakes, Venezuelan hot dogs and pizza
fondue. He peppers in personal stories and tips to inspire readers
to become fearless fusion chefs themselves.
