Summer comes as such a relief not just because the warm weather
liberates us from our cold-weather cloister, but its welcome longer days offer us extra time to explore. When considering what adventures to undertake this season, consider using that time to help people in need. Five women in our pages have done just that. From tackling child obesity to climbing the world’s highest peaks to raise money for women in need, they work on behalf of Latinos in several fields (p. 38). Or perhaps you may choose to lend your free hours to artistic endeavors. If that’s the case, take your pointers from Ballet Hispanico (p. 46), the company that developed a new style blending contemporary, classical and Latin American dance. If your tastes veer toward the theatrical, check out Tiempo Libre, a band of Cuban musicians who reconnected in Miami to tell their story on stage (p. 56). If you’re fortunate enough that summer grants you more time, venture east to the lapping shore of Galicia (p. 18) where local architecture and festivities seem to stem from the medieval ages. But if you have but a few spare hours, a new movie, book, concert or music recording may do the trick (p. 64). Whatever summer diversion you choose, take a deep breath and enjoy the chance to escape.
